Hello. My name is Holly Leonard. I’m 17 years old and a junior. I have two brothers and a way older half brother and sister. I’m the youngest in my family. I have two dogs and a cat. My favorite free time activities are reading and watching TV. I’m a Christian and I attend Walnut Creek Community Church. I’m not involved in any clubs or anything I am, however, actively involved in my church. I love going on mission trips and will usually volunteer when an opportunity occurs. I’m really quiet unless I’m with my family or friends or am completely comfortable in a situation then getting me to shut up is really hard. Even though I’m quiet and shy I love people. I would like to do something that involves travel and/or little kids when I get older.

The purpose of writing the definition essay was to explain the definition of self-image and give the reader an understanding of the word. I think I did an ok job describing the definition. I’m not totally sure I really got the assignment. My audience was Mr. Johnson and anyone else who happened to read it. The exigence of my writing was because I feel like self-image is something a lot of teens deal with.

Self-image affects self-esteem. The opposite is true to, self-esteem affects self-image. Self-image helps make up self-esteem. If a person does not have a good self-image it will hurt their self-esteem.

The use of photo editing software on pictures in magazines can mess with a persons self-esteem and can lead to some serious problems.
The images that people see everyday affects them. If all that is seen on TV and in magazines are picture perfect girls than a person starts to believe that if they do not look like that than they are not pretty, which can lead to the person going to extreme measures to look perfect. Some of the measures include anorexia, bulimia, and plastic surgery. 1 out of every 200 women in the Western world are anorexic and 1 in 50 are bulimic. 53% of 13 year old American girls are unhappy with their body and it increases to 78% by the age of 17.
The American culture has a view of beauty that is unrealistic and unattainable. The culture tells girls if they are not skinny enough or do not look a certain way there is something wrong with them that needs to be changed. This ideology hurts a person’s self-esteem and causes problems that do not happen as often as in other cultures. In most other countries people are happy with one meal a day and would not turn down a meal because they do not know where their next meal will come from.
Other cultures also have a different concept of what is beautiful. In some cultures being fat is considered a good thing. In another culture being bald is considered beautiful.
